In the Sony Pictures animation, Smurfs: The Lost Village, I worked as a matte painter focusing on backgrounds. The clouds for this animated movie were very stylized, even more so than they were in Storks. The general idea was to make the backgrounds very simple as the focus of attention was on the characters. In terms of background design, we had to adhere to the style of the Smurfs creator, the Belgian comics artist Peyo whose backgrounds were always very simple illustrations. So the clouds had an ice cream scoop quality to them.
